Your car will not start

Work through it in order. Most of the time you will know what you are dealing with before you phone anybody.

Nothing at all when you turn the key

No crank, no dashboard, no interior light, or everything very dim. That is almost always the battery, a loose or corroded terminal, or a failed main earth.

Open the bonnet and look at the terminals. White or blue-green powder around them, or a clamp that moves when you push it, will stop a car starting on its own. Clean connections and a tight clamp cost nothing to check.

It turns over slowly, then gives up

A tired battery, most often on the first properly cold morning of the year. The battery has been losing capacity all summer and the cold has made the engine harder to turn at the same time.

A jump will get you going. It will not tell you whether the battery survives the week, which is what the test is for.

It turns over normally but will not fire

The battery is doing its job. The problem is fuel, spark or the immobiliser, and anyone who sells you a battery without testing first is guessing with your money.

It starts on a jump, then dies again

Either the battery no longer holds a charge, or the alternator is not putting one back. Our test covers the charging system as well as the battery, so you do not end up replacing the wrong part.

Nobody to jump you

Phone 011 869 2427. Within 10 km of the store we bring the battery out and fit it where the car is standing.

Find your battery

Which battery does your car take?

Read the code off the top or side of your current battery — three digits, sometimes with letters after them, like 628 or 646.

Prices include VAT, fitment and the scrap exchange on your old battery. See every size we stock, or come in for a free test.
